Do you count for the thunder clap after you see a bolt strike? Waiting for rumble and roar…

counting time to determine how close the storms is to you. Lighting bolts are a signal, that lights up the dark and unseen. Of what will come next after the thunder or crash when the electricity connects with the earth.

Illness feels like that, a lighting bolt that jolts you into a state where you are counting the number of days. Freezing while you see the unseen. What you knew yesterday wasn’t the same as today.

I choose to spend a night in a pup tent to feel the storm, just some canvas between me and the rain. My observations as the wind pick up, was to remember how hard we anchored the sides into the ground, to have a plan if the tent blew over, where to go for sanctuary. A headlamp and a wide brim hat during the early morning was my best decision, gear that gave me peace mind so that I could see during that dark time. That is what a death doula is a headlamp during the dark times, a guide. A knowledgeable attendant for the emotions to help your loved ones have time , to guide the process during the count before the rumble and roar.
